Südspidol reaches a major milestone towards the human-centred hospital of tomorrow

The Centre Hospitalier Emile Mayrisch (CHEM) Südspidol project in Esch-sur-Alzette has reached a decisive milestone. The consolidated preliminary design has been submitted to CHEM ahead of its delivery to the Ministry of Health and Social Security.
This progress brings southern Luxembourg one step closer to a new hospital complex that is sustainable, adaptable and deeply human-centred. Driven by close collaboration between CHEM, the SWECO/G.A.F./S.W.A.A. consortium and a wide range of international experts, the project aims to raise the standard of healthcare infrastructure and support the well-being of generations to come.
A care environment designed for patients and staff
With Südspidol, the Centre Hospitalier Emile Mayrisch (CHEM) aims to create much more than a place for treatment. The future hospital will be an integral part of the community: a reassuring environment for patients during difficult times, as well as a stimulating workplace for staff. The design translates this ambition into concrete choices, including healthy indoor air quality, rooms that promote rest and recovery, and optimised routes that support efficient day-to-day operations. Connectivity, comfort and efficiency come together to create a genuine healing environment that supports recovery and the well-being of the entire community.
Multidisciplinary expertise for an integrated project
Since 2024, Sweco has led the SWECO/G.A.F./S.W.A.A. consortium, bringing together expertise from Luxembourg, Belgium and beyond in hospital design, architecture, engineering and project support. Building on the existing plans, the teams are developing an integrated and coherent solution capable of evolving in line with the needs of medicine and society.
Sweco’s Integrated Project Management (IPM) approach structures this multidisciplinary collaboration. It strengthens coordination, transparent decision-making, budget control and risk monitoring, while ensuring that the right expertise is mobilised at the right time. This approach is essential to unite more than 100 contributors from several countries, working in five languages, around a shared ambition.
A stronger foothold in Luxembourg
Since 2021, Sweco Luxembourg has pursued a clear objective: to strengthen its lasting local presence by putting its teams’ expertise at the service of projects that are shaping the Grand Duchy. Südspidol fully embodies this ambition.
This organisation combines proximity to CHEM and knowledge of the Luxembourg context with the strength of an extensive international network. It brings together the local and cross-border expertise needed to deliver an essential piece of infrastructure for the south of the country.
